Blog Entry 1


My reason why: I chose From Grimm to Disney as my FYS because the tales told by the Grimm's filled me with wonder when I was little. They remind everyone of a time when they believed those magic filled stories were real. We didn't question whether talking animals or objects, giants, ogres or fairies were real. I am also very interested in fantasy and enjoy reading and analysing the meaning behind stories. I spent my childhood reading as much as possible, however since High School I have struggled to fit reading into my everyday life. Another reason I chose this FYS was because about a week before the topics of the First Year Seminars were announced I had bought a copy of the Grimm's Fairy Tales. I thought it was a bit too much of a coincidence that it was also the subject of a class that I could take. 
What I hope to accomplish: In this class I hope to deepen my understanding of who Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were, what went on in their lives and how they collected these stories. I want to be able to identify and make sense of the meaning behind the fairy tales. Learn what makes a fairytale so interesting not only to children but adults too. Also to become more confident in college writing and giving presentations. 
Favourite fairytale: My favourite fairytale is The Brave Little Tailor. I like this tale because I admire the intelligence and wit the tailor possesses. He is able to outsmart and overcome any challenge given to him and sometimes does this with deception. He is able to live happily ever after only because of what he makes of himself and doesn’t have any assistance.

This semester I have read and learned about a lot of new and old fairy tales. These fairy tales were “Brier Rose”, “Cinderella”, “Little Snow White”, “The Brave Little Tailor”, “The Frog King”, “Little Red Cap”, “The Robber Bridegroom”, “Bluebeard”, “Fitcher’s Bird”, “Hansel and Gretel”, “The Juniper Tree” and “Rapunzel”.  Some of these tales were known to me and others weren’t. The interesting part was that even the tales I did know I realized I didn’t know the original Brothers Grimm version of the tale. I learned a lot about the Brothers Grimm themselves and how what is happening in society can be reflected in literature from that time. Knowing who the Brothers Grimm were and where they were from allowed a deeper understanding and respect for the tales they wrote.  I feel like when I read fairy tales I can’t wait to unearth and decipher the meaning behind the words being read. The Brothers Grimm 2005 fantasy movie is an interesting one to watch. It contains little fact as to what the real Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s lives were like and many inaccuracies. This however comes as no surprise as the film is fantasy. The film depicts the brothers as con-men who kill the supernatural/magic and record their travels. When caught by the French the brothers are forced to help save a village that’s children are missing. Jacob is played by Heath Ledger and is portrayed as meek, mild and a bookworm. Wilhelm is played by Matt Damon and is portrayed as in charge, charismatic and confident. There ends up being an evil witch taking the children and using them to bring her youth back. There is a love interest for both brothers in the form of Angelika a villager who helps them navigate the enchanted forest. The cartoon I have chosen centers around the theme of Rapunzel’s long hair. The scene is a ‘high school’ Rapunzel getting picked up for prom by her date. Her date is in a blue tuxedo, standing next to a car and is saying “I like you with your hair up”. Rapunzel is wearing purple floor-length dress and has her hair braided/woven up in a long stack on top of her head.   As discussed in class, hair can be seen in fairy tales as a symbol of femininity, strength, beauty, and sexuality. In the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale and Disney film ‘Tangled’ Rapunzel’s long hair seems to also serve a purpose. In both her hair is used to ensure she is unable to leave the tower in which Mother Gothel locks her in, it also ensures that there is only one way up to the tower to deter outsiders.
