All three tales “Fitcher’s Bird” by Brothers
Grimm, “The Robber Bridegroom” by Brothers Grimm and “Bluebeard” by Charles
Perrault has significant similarities. All three start with marriage and unhappy
ones. Generally, in fairy tales, marriage is the reward for good and happens at
the end of the fairy tale. In all the tales the man is evil/bad. Normally it is
an evil woman, stepmother or witch who deserves to be punished at the end of
the fairy tale. Not only is the man evil in all three tales he murdered his
previous wives. The evidence of these murders is quite graphic as in one of
the tales the protagonist watches another bride get killed and in the other two
tales, the protagonist finds a room with dead bodies and blood. There is also
the presence of curiosity in the tales. The female protagonist was curious
either about where her husband to be lived or what was in the room which was forbidden. The curiosity creates this idea
that the female protagonists in the tales are at fault and have done something
punishable.
In “Fitcher’s Bird” by the Brothers Grimm is unique because
it has the female protagonist outwitting the evil sorcerer. Her plan of leaving
the skull at the window and disguising herself as a bird is very individual to
this tale. She is very active and is able to outwit the sorcerer, save her sisters
and live happily ever after. Another unique part of this tale is the egg and the
key. The sorcerer gives his prisoner a key and an egg before he leaves, these
two objects are a strange combination that only really come together in this tale
and one other.
“The Robber Bridegroom” by Brothers Grimm is unique because
the female protagonist uses the power of the narrative to defeat the evil
robber. She tells the story of what happened when she visited his house like it
was a dream but she has evidence to prove it was real. She is not only active
in her own story and not a witch or stepmother or considered evil but also
writes/tells her own story.
Bluebeard” by Charles Perrault has many unique aspects. One
of them, of course, is Bluebeard’s blue beard. This is something which isn’t
found in any other tales and really stands out in this tale. This tale also has
the enchanted key which the blood won’t wipe off.
I personally liked “Fitcher’s Bird” the most as
I really enjoyed how active the youngest sibling was. She saved her sisters,
tricked the sorcerer and helped serve his punishment.
